DAWSON CREEK -- Two eighth-grade students at Dawson Creek Secondary School have made waves in the world of engineering after taking the top spot at the JR Provincial Skills Canada competition.

Thor MacLean and Kelly Amonsen’s journey to Vancouver began when their teacher selected them to represent DCSS in the provincials competition held in Abbotsford, where they won gold.

The win secured the duo tickets and accommodation to compete in the engineering round of the Skills Canada competition in Vancouver.

The pair faced off against other students from across the province, but MacLean and Amonsen were able to showcase their ingenuity and teamwork.

On April 17, during the intense competition, the duo built a gravity car.

Constructed entirely from cardboard, weights, discs, and wooden dowels, the car demonstrated their ability to create a functional vehicle without any mechanical parts.

MacLean and Amonsen used a string tied to a weight to propel their creation 41 feet farther than the runner-up, securing their first-place finish.

Following their win, both MacLean and Amonsen were invited to compete in the Nationals competition in Quebec.

However, despite their talent, organizers deemed them too young to participate.
