FORT ST. JOHN -- If you received a phone call from Northern Health claiming you’ve won a prize, the health authority is warning that it’s a scam.

Northern Health says they have become aware of several instances of fraudulent phone calls of scammers posing as employees to collect personal information from recipients in exchange for prizes or free home safety inspections.

The health authority issued the warning on its social media channels, advising businesses and individuals who receive calls or emails to confirm the origin of the caller or sender.

They say if in doubt, call their regional office to confirm that the representative is offering a legitimate incentive before giving out any information, making purchases, or giving a donation.

Northern Health is also encouraging residents to protect themselves against potential scams by following the advice of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and to verify if an organization is legitimate.

Northern Health’s regional office can be reached toll-free by calling 1-866-565-2999.

Incidents can also be reported by email by contacting servicedesk@northernhealth.ca.
