FORT ST. JOHN -- The Salvation Army in Fort St. John is seeing an increase in demand for its food bank.

On average, 800 people a month are now turning to the charity for help with food, according to executive director Jared Braun.

“A lot of people who never had to use the foodbank before are coming through our doors and asking—how can I get help,” said Braun.

He says it is clear people are facing financial pressures that leave very little left for groceries.

“Nobody in Fort St. John needs to go hungry,” says Braun.

In an effort to raise food donations, the charity has teamed up with a local hair salon and barbershop for an annual fundraising event dubbed ‘Cuts for Cans.’

In exchange for a non-perishable food item, Studio 105 will provide free haircuts.

The event will be taking place Saturday, March 9th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Salvation Army will have it's van on location, and are looking to fill it with as much food as possible.

“When local community members and local businesses step forward and want to express their support in really tangible and practical ways, creative ways, enables us to do the work that we do,” said Braun.

The Salvation Army also accepts cash donations that go towards low supply stocks, and hygiene products.
