CHETWYND, BC -- Winter storm conditions are creating a high avalanche danger in the south Peace Region.
Avalanche Canada has classified the avalanche risk as “very dangerous.” Up to 20cm of fresh snow along with high winds are creating fresh storm slabs at all elevations. These are expected to become even more volatile as it continues to snow and blow in the coming days.
During these conditions, even a small slide could trigger unstable layers near the base of the snowpack and produce very large avalanches. These layers are widespread throughout the region, and are more problematic in steep, rocky alpine terrain.
Anyone venturing into the backcountry is urged to avoid the alpine during periods of heavy loading from new snow or wind. Be aware of deep, weak layers, and choose conservative terrain, avoiding thin areas like rock outcroppings.
