CHETWYND -- A state of local emergency in place since Wednesday due to the threat posed by the Wildmare Creek wildfire has been cancelled.

The wildfire is now listed as being held after burning out of control 10 kilometres southwest of Chetwynd since it was discovered on April 24.

The remaining evacuation alert has also been rescinded for homes in the Pine River area.

The Prince George Fire Centre saying today that 25 firefighters and a helicopter were on scene battling the blaze.

A perimeter track conducted yesterday afternoon is still estimating the size of the fire at 76 hectares.

Weather conditions today and into the weekend remain favourable, according to Prince George Fire Centre Information Officer Sharon Nickel.

“With the cooler temperatures, less wind, and some precipitation coming, that works in our favour in terms of fire suppression," said Nickel.

Nickel adds there's been no structural damage that the fire centre is aware of, with the Peace River Regional District Emergency Operations Centre confirming those reports.

The Wildmare Creek fire was discovered between the Stone Creek and Dokkie subdivisions.

Dozens of properties that were under evacuation order have since been able to return home.

The BC Wildfire Service says the fire is suspected to be human caused.
