TUMBLER RIDGE -- A wildfire burning 82 kilometres south of Dawson Creek has been downgraded.
The Thunder Creek wildfire, discovered last Thursday, was initially burning out of control near Bearhole Lake Provincial Park, east of Tumbler Ridge.
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has confirmed that the fire is now listed as ‘being held.’
The blaze grew from 13 to just under 88 hectares in size before being contained.
A full response team, including fire fighting personnel, helicopters. and heavy equipment, were deployed to battle the blaze.
A section of Highway 52 eastbound has also reopened after being shut down due to the threat of the fire ‘crossing the roadway.’
The wildfire is suspected to have been caused by lightning.
The BCWS also confirmed smoke that filled the sky in Dawson Creek and surrounding area last Friday was not due to the Thunder Creek fire, but from active wildfires northwest of the region.
