FORT ST. JOHN -- One person was taken into custody and later released following an armed standoff with Fort St. John RCMP over the weekend.

Police were called to a residence on the 8500 Block of 85th Street shortly after 5:00 a.m. Sunday for reports of a dispute.

According to the RCMP, yelling could be heard in a 9-1-1 call with a female resdient who said she was involved in a fight with the suspect, loaded firearms were present, and the accused may be suicidal.

RCMP say that a containment was set up around the area out of ‘an abundance of caution.’

Pictures circulating on social media show a large police presence in the area.

RCMP successfully evacuated two people from inside the residence but the suspect remained inside, according to police.

The North District Emergency Response Team (ERT) was then called in to assist in negotiations with the suspect, but those attempts failed according to RCMP.

RCMP say they then deployed a chemical irritant into the home that resulted in the suspect being taken into custody.

No injuries were reported in the incident and the suspect was later released pending a future court date.

RCMP say that suspect could be facing multiple charges.
