FORT ST. JOHN -- As of 5:00 a.m. April 29, special weather statements regarding the potential for heavy snow in the Peace River District, and Highway 97 east of Pine Pass have been issued by Environment Canada.

The weather centre is warning of snowfall accumulation between five and 15 centimetres throughout the day heading into tonight.

“Snowfall accumulation across the regions will be highly variable with higher accumulations more likely along the eastern slopes of the Rockies,” said Environment Canada in a release.

A band of heavy rain is also expected to develop over the Peace River district today.

Environment Canada says the precipitation will fall as snow along the eastern slops of the Rockies.

For regions further away from the Rockies, heavy rain will transition to a rain/snow mix throughout the course of the day.

The precipitation brings good news for ongoing drought conditions across the region.

The current drought level in the Northeast is listed as a five, the highest number on the provincial scale.

Environment Canada is asking residents to monitor alerts and forecasts.
