DAWSON CREEK -- This Sunday marks an important day across Canada to honour and remember missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.

Red Dress Day is a “National Day of Awareness” to highlight and try and end the violence perpetrated against these individuals.

The issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women is one that has struck at the heart of Dawson Creek. Darylyn Supernant and Renee Didier have been missing since last year.

The Nawican Friendship Centre in Dawson Creek is hosting an event this Sunday, starting at 3 p.m. at NAR Park.

Organizers say it is a chance to bring light to the subject. Jan Atkinson with the Nawican Friendship Centre says, “This is not a historical thing, it's current and it happens on a regular basis.”

Members of the public are being asked to wear anything red (ribbon skirt or shirt) in honour of these missing and murdered women.

“RCMP numbers for missing and murdered vary from Indigenous numbers for missing and murdered. The big part of that is because Indigenous women weren't on record, so lots of our numbers will vary from the RCMP,” said Atkinson

A walk through the city of Dawson Creek will be held. It will at NAR Park and end at the Nawican Friendship Centre.
