FORT ST. JOHN -- One person has been arrested after the Fort St. John Street Enforcement Team dismantled a drug trafficking operation believed to have been targeting youth.
In a press release, RCMP say on May 30, 2024, they learned of a suspicious residence in the 10700 block of 102nd Avenue.
An investigation into the residence by the Street Enforcement Team led to a search warrant being executed on June 10th.
During a search of the property, police found evidence of trafficking of illicit cannabis and psilocybin, widely known by the street name ‘shrooms’ or ‘magic mushrooms.’
RCMP locating five kilograms of suspected cannabis, 2.7 kilograms of cannabis edibles, and 700 grams of psilocybin.
Cash totalling $26,000 was also found, according to police.
RCMP also seized two vehicles during the search warrant, one believed to be used in trafficking the contraband and the second alleged to be the proceeds of crime.
A man was arrested at the scene and was later released pending further investigation.
“The investigation revealed that youth were frequenting the residence and it is believed that the suspect was trafficking to the youth,” said Fort St. John RCMP.
Constable Connor Watson with the Fort St. John RCMP says the search is part of a wider effort by the Street Enforcement Team to suppress contraband trafficking in the city.
“The presence of youth at the residence was concerning which made this a priority for the police.”
RCMP are also reminding the public that Cannabis Regulations do not allow for packaging to be enticing to children or youth, warning parents to be aware of packaging that may resemble that of candy wrapping.
Fort St. John RCMP say an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
