DAWSON CREEK -- While Wednesday is an off-day for the 2023 National Women's Under-18 Hockey Championships, Thursday will mark the first day of the quarter-finals.
The event is taking place at the Ovintiv Events Centre in Dawson Creek until Saturday.
On Tuesday, the Alberta team, including Peace Region Local Molly Hamilton faced Saskatchewan yesterday evening. Jordan Blouin scored the lone goal to lead Alberta to win against Saskatchewan. Alberta finished second in group b at the championships.
Ryan Macivor is the City of Dawson Creek’s manager overseeing the event. He calls Hamilton a "homegrown hero. He says he remembers when she was just a little girl on the ice watching the games with her dad. The championships were held at the Ovintiv Events Centre in 2012.
Hamilton says it’s surreal being back in the city. “It’s a surreal feeling. I just remember it being the flagbearer and the ice scraper here and the Ovintiv Events Centre and it's just honestly so great to be back here and see such familiar faces. And the volunteers have done a great job of making all the girls feel at home.”
As for the B.C. team, they faced Ontario Red yesterday night. Chloe Primerano was behind all four goals for the local team. However, the win went to Ontario Red with the final score of 6-4. They’ll be facing Saskatchewan at 7:30p.m on Thursday.
