FORT ST. JOHN -- Open Fire Prohibitions associated with Category Two and Three open burns will go into effect as of noon today across Northern B.C.
The restrictions would ban burning piles larger than two metres high and three metres wide, burning windrows that exceed 200 metres, lighting fireworks, and sending up sky lanterns across sections covered by the Prince George Fire Centre.
The locations include the Peace Region, north of the Interior Plateau, north of the Omenica Mountains, and sections of the Rocky Mountain Trench.
The Prince George Wildfire Centre says they take multiple factors into consideration when deciding to impose a prohibition including forecasted weather, drought conditions, the Buildup Index, and firefighting resources.
“This prohibition is being implemented to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety due to the high grass fire hazard, persistent drought conditions and increased incidence of human-caused wildfires,” said the Fire Centre in a statement.
