DAWSON CREEK -- An accident on the Alaska Highway over the Canada Day long weekend has claimed the life of one person.

It happened just before 9:00 Saturday morning, north of Farmington near 245 Road.

Dawson Creek RCMP were called to scene after a car travelling southbound on Highway 97 crossed the centre line.

Police say the vehicle sideswiped a fully loaded dump truck and careened about 100 feet down the highway before coming to rest in a ditch.

Paramedics rushed to the accident however the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the dump truck escaped unhurt.

The highway was closed for almost 7 hours. A collision analyst team from Fort St. John and the BC Highway Patrol are assisting the Dawson Creek RCMP in the on-going investigation..

Police are asking anyone with dash cam footage of the area at the time of the accident to contact the Dawson Creek RCMP detachment.
