DAWSON CREEK -- Northern Health has issued a toxic drug alert for a street drug known as "side."

It's being described as chunky purple substance that can cause sudden overdose when smoked.

Northern Health says multiple doses of the reversal medication naloxone is required to counteract its effects.

The health authority is advising users to recognize the signs and symptoms of an overdose, avoid using the drug alone, and have a safety plan in place.

CJDC-TV first learned of a purple substance circulating Dawson Creek streets in late July, after three overdose deaths were reported over the span of 10 days.

At that time, the RCMP called the increase in overdose deaths ‘alarming,’ though Northern Health stated they were unaware of any local drug supply issues.

RCMP have confirmed at least one death linked to the drug.

The Dawson Creek RCMP along with the BC Coroners Service continue parallel investigations into the deaths.

The toxic drug alert will remain in place until August 29.
