Woman sentenced to 24 months in fatal Hudson’s Hope impaired-driving crash

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - A woman responsible for a fatal impaired-driving crash in Hudson’s Hope has been sentenced to two years behind bars.

According to the BC Prosecution Service, Makenzee Lynn Doonan-Scott pleaded guilty on September 8 to impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm in connection with a crash that killed an 18-year-old man.

On Thursday, Doonan-Scott was sentenced in Fort St. John court to 24 months in jail for impaired driving causing death and 18 months for impaired driving causing bodily harm.

The sentences will be served concurrently, meaning she will serve a total of 24 months.

The court also imposed a three-year driving prohibition. The Crown stayed the remaining charges at the conclusion of the sentencing hearing.

The charges stem from a single-vehicle crash in the early morning hours of June 30, 2023, on Canyon Drive in Hudson’s Hope.

Hudson’s Hope RCMP said a vehicle failed to negotiate a turn and went into a ditch.

An 18-year-old man was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, while three other occupants suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said at the time that speed and alcohol were believed to be contributing factors.

The BC Prosecution Service said it does not disclose where individual offenders are incarcerated.

Generally, sentences of two years or more are served in federal correctional facilities, while sentences of less than two years are typically served in provincial institutions.

The fatal crash sparked a lengthy investigation by Hudson’s Hope RCMP and ultimately led to the criminal convictions announced Thursday.
