DAWSON CREEK, B.C. - Residents across the South Peace region are being urged to prepare for potentially damaging winds overnight as Environment Canada has issued a wind warning covering the area.

A powerful low-pressure system moving across British Columbia is expected to bring a sudden surge of strong winds into the Peace Region just after midnight.

Forecasters say wind gusts could reach between 80 and 100 kilometres per hour as the system moves eastward across the province.

Environment Canada says the strongest winds will first impact communities in the Lakes District and Central Interior before reaching the South Peace overnight.

The intense burst of wind is expected to be relatively short-lived, with conditions easing after a few hours, although moderate winds will continue afterward.

The weather agency warns the powerful gusts could cause damage to roofs, fences, tree branches and temporary structures.

Residents are also being advised to stay clear of any downed power lines and be prepared for possible disruptions to transportation, utilities and other services.

Ahead of the strongest winds, the South Peace is expected to see cloudy conditions with showers developing through the day.

Winds are forecast to increase significantly late this evening, reaching 60 km/h with gusts up to 100 km/h before gradually easing overnight.

Environment Canada says wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds and is encouraging residents to continue monitoring forecasts and weather alerts as conditions evolve.
