A wildfire that had threatened the Fort Nelson First Nation is now being held, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
The wildfire service said that based on fuel and weather conditions and resource availability, the Fort Nelson River wildfire is expected to remain within its current perimeter.
The fire was discovered on May 28 and grew to 12,423 hectares in size. It’s one of three wildfires burning near Sikanni Old Growth Provincial Park.
On June 25, The Fort Nelson First Nation rescinded the Evacuation Order for its Fontas reserve, southeast of Fort Nelson.
The other two fires east of the Sikanni Chief River are also being held. The fire that is in close proximity to the Sikanni Old Growth Provincial Park is 118 hectares in size. The other fire is 27 hectares in size and is burning three kilometers south of the Fontas River.
Currently, the are 70 wildfires that are burning across the province, 20 per cent of which are burning out of control.
