Dawson Creek firefighter Captain Brooks Gower was hit by a pickup truck last week on Highway 97 South near Groundbirch.
He was struck while responding to a call about a single vehicle rolled over in the ditch around 7 am on Wednesday.
Brooks’ wife, Tryna, said he suffered nine broken ribs and five broken vertebrae, but did not sustain any spinal cord injury. He also has two broken legs and a broken arm, which have been surgically repaired.
Tryna said Brooks is no longer in critical conditions. She added that his progress so far has been “a story book miracle,” and said he’s expected to walk again.
“He looks like a Dawson Creek Coop renovation project with nails (literally) from his head to his toes, but his face is still perfect and handsome with one small scar that’ll just make him look tougher,” she said.
She said that when Brooks heard about his improving condition, he immediately started asking about the Blue Jays game and pepped right up.
That morning, Tryna said the weather was atrocious with freezing rain and thick fog.
She wants to remind everyday citizens to be more aware on the roads. She said if everyone would increase their alertness by 10 to 20 percent, accident like this one could be avoided.
Tryna also thanked the community because it has been incredibly supportive. “Good people are everywhere and I’m seeing it every second,” she said.
Fire Chief Marcel Capelle said there has been a sense of relief at the fire hall, adding that he’s proud of how all firefighters came together to support Brooks.
