Warm temperatures and high winds are sweeping the Peace Region. After a significant amount of snow fell in the last month, concerns now turn to flooding.
So far, the City of Dawson Creek says that no major flooding has been reported.
Temperatures this week are forecast to remain above the freezing mark and melting snow can cause water to pool.
On Wednesday, part of the Peace Region could see temperature in the double digits. With over 70 centimetres of snow having fallen since the beginning of December, the melting snow could cause problems for homeowners, businesses and motorists.
With that in mind, the City of Dawson Creek is offering some tip with reduce flooding;
- Clear snow away from exterior doorways and thresholds so melting water can drain away from buildings
- Shovel snow away from foundations to reduce the risk of water entering basements or crawl spaces
- Check eavestroughs and downspouts to ensure they’re clear and directing water away from buildings
- Watch for meltwater that may refreeze overnight, creating icy patches—especially in shaded areas and downtown
- Use sand or traction material on icy spots where possible
- Take extra care when walking or driving—go slow and move carefully
City staff say a little prevention goes a long way in keeping everyone safe as conditions change.
