Vehicle falls into Wapiti River after crash on bridge south of Grande Prairie

A vehicle ended up in the Wapiti River following a crash on the Wapiti Bridge south of Grande Prairie Tuesday morning.

According to Grande Prairie RCMP, officers were called to the scene on Highway 40 just after 9 a.m. The Wapiti Bridge is located about 20 minutes south of the city.

Police say the crash involved a single vehicle, which fell from the bridge into the river below. Hours after the crash, they say the vehicle remained in the water as emergency crews continued their response.

Photos shared on social media appear to show a section of the bridge’s fence completely destroyed, along with what appears to be the vehicle partially submerged in the Wapiti River.

RCMP have not released information about the condition of the driver.

The collision forced the closure of Highway 40 Tuesday morning. The highway has since reopened, however southbound traffic continues to be diverted around the scene as the investigation remains ongoing.

More details are expected to be released as the situation unfolds.
