Tumbler Ridge victim showing signs of recovery, surgery planned May 5

The mother of Tumbler Ridge victim Maya Gebala says her daughter is still recovering in Canada, despite reports circulating online.

“The process to transfer hasn’t been easy, to say the least. However, you will hear it from us first thing if or when we do,” her mother said on social media.

Earlier reports suggested that Maya would travel to Los Angeles for a specialized recovery approach.

In the same update, her mother says Maya got her feeding tube removed after she attempted to pull it out three times. She says the girl now has a feeding pouch connected to her stomach and is showing strong sign that she may relearn how to swallow.

Maya will undergo surgery on May 5 to receive a prosthetic skull cap. The mother says it will help regulate fluid buildup and remove pressure on her left eye. “Maybe we will get to see both her big blue eyes soon,” she added.

The girl’s mother says her motor skills are slowly returning, as she can tap her fingers back and forth.

After Maya’s last surgery, there were concerns she might not be able to speak again due to the damaged area. However, the surgeon told her mother that Maya continues to prove them wrong.

“I’m so proud of both of my babies for choosing strength in such a dark time,” the mother said.
