Residents of Tumbler Ridge will gather Thursday evening to quietly mark 30 days since the mass shooting.
Flags at district buildings will be raised back to full mast for the first time since February 10.
That day, a shooting at a school and a home in Tumbler Ridge left nine people dead, including the suspect Jesse Van Rootselaar.
“Over the past month, the lowered flags have stood as a visible expression of the grief felt throughout our community and beyond,” the district said in a social media post.
Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka says raising the flags again represents one step forward in the grieving process. He adds Thursday’s gathering is about being supportive to grieving families.
An Indigenous prayer will be held at 6 pm, and the flags will be raised at sunset. Afterward, the memorial at Town Hall will be moved to join another near the tree by the Roman Walkway.
Members of the public can also join a district-led moment of remembrance. The district is asking to approach the moment with care and respect.
