The Tumbler Ridge Community Centre has been nominated for the annual Kraft Hockeyville competition.
The Kraft Hockeyville winning community will receive $250,000 to improve its local arena and host an NHL preseason game.
The nomination and rally phase ended yesterday. Residents could share hockey-related stories, photos and notes of support to gain rally points for the community centre.
One story that gained traction said the Tumbler Ridge tragedy claimed the life of one hockey player and left another fighting for her life.
“I would love for people to know Tumbler Ridge as more than where a mass school shooting happened,” the person who shared the story said.
Provincial and territorial winners will be announced March 14. A week later, the final two arenas will be selected, and public voting will open at the start of April.
Over 20 years of Kraft Hockeyville, $5.4 million has been awarded to 105 communities across Canada. Only three BC Communities have won the competition, including Terrace in 2009.
