Highway 52N remains closed north of Tumbler Ridge after five separate wildfires broke out Wednesday afternoon.

The fires ranges in size from 50 hectares down to one hectare. Two of of the blazes have merged in a 35 hectares blaze and is still burning out of control, while the other three, including the largest fire are being held.

The fires are burning 74 kilometres north of Tumbler Ridge, in an area from Brassey Road to Bearhole Lake Road. They are all burning close to the highway and are all thought to be human caused.

The BC Wildfire Service says that 15 firefighters and and two helicopters are working to suppress the three fires that are still burning out of control.

The Wildfire Service is concerned about the windy and warm conditions Thursday afternoon that could fan the flames.

The wildfire has also impacted communications to the Tumbler Ridge RCMP detachment. The cable has been destroyed by fire and all telephone, cell phone, radio and internet connections are unavailable.

Anyone in the area, or travelling through or require police assistance, will need to physically attend the RCMP detachment to report any issues. It is not known when the repairs will be made.

While the highway remains closed, motorists can check the DriveBC website for updates.

The Wildfire Service is reminding the public to be mindful and responsible during warm and windy conditions. If you do spot a wildfire, you can report is by calling 1-800-663-5555 or by dialing #5555 on your cellphone.
