TAYLOR, B.C. — The District of Taylor has taken a step toward strengthening emergency response capacity across Northeast B.C., formally approving its participation in a regional mutual aid agreement.
Taylor council has authorized the mayor and chief administrative officer to execute the Peace Region Major Event Mutual Aid Agreement on behalf of the district.
The agreement brings together municipalities, regional districts and fire service agencies across the Peace Region, creating a formal framework to support one another during large-scale emergencies that exceed local resources.
Participating communities include the Peace River Regional District, the cities of Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, and several smaller communities such as Chetwynd, Hudson’s Hope, Pouce Coupe, Tumbler Ridge and Taylor, along with the Tomslake and District Volunteer Fire Department.
According to a staff report presented to council, emergency events across the region are becoming more complex and difficult to manage. These include wildland-urban interface fires, industrial incidents and severe weather, all of which can strain local response capacity.
Officials say the agreement acknowledges that no single community can maintain the personnel and equipment needed to respond to every scenario on its own. Instead, it establishes a coordinated approach to sharing resources when a “major event” is declared.
The agreement also outlines standardized procedures for requesting and deploying assistance, including adopting a common Incident Command System structure and consistent firefighter competency practices across the region.
Under the framework, existing mutual aid agreements must still be used first, with the new agreement serving as an option when incidents escalate beyond those arrangements.
For communities in Northeast B.C., the move is aimed at improving coordination and response times during large-scale emergencies, where regional cooperation can play a critical role.
