TAYLOR, B.C. - A Taylor resident is asking council to continue pursuing solutions to train whistle noise after describing what they say has been a significant increase in long and disruptive horn blasts throughout the community.
In a letter to council, Britanny Bauming says train horns have become “extremely disruptive” this year, affecting residents’ ability to enjoy time outdoors, hold conversations and sleep through the night.
“We understand that living in a community with a railway means there will be train noise,” Bauming wrote. “However, what we are experiencing has gone far beyond normal railway noise.”
Bauming is asking the District to investigate why long, continuous horn blasts are occurring and whether that level of train whistle use is required.
The letter also encourages the municipality to continue pursuing whistle cessation measures and other options that could provide relief for residents.
The latest complaint comes as train whistles have remained an issue before Taylor council in recent months.
As CJDC-TV News reported in July, council began examining concerns about train horn volume after residents raised the issue and later moved forward with efforts to investigate whistle cessation options at the Highway 97 rail crossing.
In August, representatives from CN Rail discussed rail safety, public awareness and whistle requirements before council.
During that discussion, council acknowledged train whistling is regulated by Transport Canada while emphasizing the importance of rail safety in a community that continues to see rail traffic.
Council expressed interest in working with CN Rail on additional rail-safety initiatives and public education efforts.
The matter will be discussed at the next council meeting scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m. at the District of Taylor office.
