Motorists travelling across the Taylor Bridge will have to deal with construction delays a little longer than expected.

Dawson Road Maintenance says the ongoing bridge maintenance project has been extended to July 18 after recent harsh weather slowed progress on critical welding work.

The Taylor Bridge Welding Project, which began in May, was originally scheduled to be completed by June 30.

According to the contractor, the combination of weather-related delays and the volume of welding required on the bridge prompted the extension.

Officials say the additional time will help ensure the work is completed safely and meets quality standards.

The work continues to take place overnight on weekdays between 7 p.m. and 3:30 a.m.

During those hours, lane closures and pilot vehicles remain in effect, and oversized loads are not permitted to cross the bridge.

The Taylor Bridge is a key transportation link in northeast B.C., carrying thousands of vehicles each day, including a significant amount of commercial and industrial traffic.

“We appreciate your understanding and will continue to monitor progress closely,” Dawson Road Maintenance said in a notice. “Should conditions improve, we will make every effort to complete the work ahead of the revised schedule.”

The extended construction timeline means motorists and trucking companies will continue to face overnight travel restrictions for several more weeks.
