The District of Tumbler Ridge has reopened Southgate Street to traffic on Monday.

Southgate Street remained closed between Front Street and Monkman Way since the Feb. 10 mass shooting that claimed 8 lives.

The street serves as the main access route to the Tumbler Ridge Secondary school.

The district says the move might feel difficult or come sooner than expected for some residents.

“We recognize that this space holds deep meaning for many in our community, and that changes in this area may bring up a range of emotions,” it said.

However, the decision was made to balance community well-being, safety, and the gradual return to use of shared space.

Officials say gates will be relocated to prevent access to the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School parking lot, adding that the school property will remain fenced and secured.

The district is reminding residents that support continues to be available for those who might feel affected by the change.

“We encourage residents to take the time and space they need as this transition occurs,” it said.

The street reopens as Governor General Mary Simon is visiting the town in an effort to support the community.
