Northern Health has warned parents about a measles exposure at a school in Fort St. John. The health authority notified staff and students at Ecole Central Elementary about the exposure at the school from November 5th to 7th.

Northern Health said vaccines are the best way to stay safe and make sure you and your child’s shots are up to date. Two doses of measles vaccine provide the best protection.

For privacy reasons, Northern Health said they cannot provide more information about the nature of the exposure.

Individuals with measles are contagious four days before and four days after the characteristic rash starts. When an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, the virus spreads through the air. Symptoms typically begin seven to 21 days after being exposed.

If you or your child develop measles symptoms (fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, rash that starts on the face and spreads), stay home until four days after the rash begins.

If you believe you or someone in your care may have measles, call your doctor or the Northern Health Virtual Clinic at 1-844-645-7811 for health advice.
