South Peace snowmobilers could lose season if province doesn’t restore access to Crown land

Several areas of the South Peace Region in Northeast BC have been affected by snowmobile closures.

Snowmobiles are being restricted from using Crown land because the Province of B.C. let the permits needed to access the land expire, according to Larry Neufeld, MLA for Peace River South.

Backcountry users are calling on the province to restore access to the areas quickly.

Neufeld said, “It was the administrative fault on the part of the government. There will be myself and two other MLA’s from the opposition party, and we will be having a meeting with the minister responsible next week.”

Larry Neufeld says he believes the permit expired due to last fall’s province election. “There is real concern. The recreation users have done everything they needed to do. We need to get this fixed.”

Snowmobilers are concerned that if the province doesn’t remedy the situation soon, the entire season could be lost.
