DAWSON CREEK, B.C. - Residents interested in giving back to their community are being invited to learn more about volunteer opportunities with South Peace Search and Rescue Recruitment Night later this fall.

South Peace Search and Rescue will host a recruitment night at the end of November. The event is open to anyone curious about joining the organization or learning more about the work its volunteers perform throughout the region.

While search and rescue teams are often associated with wilderness searches and emergency response operations, the organization says there are many other ways people can get involved.

The group is seeking volunteers who enjoy the outdoors and want to develop new skills, but is also welcoming auxiliary members interested in supporting the team through fundraising, social media, administration and community events.

No previous search and rescue experience is required. According to the organization, volunteers receive training and only need a willingness to learn and contribute to the team.

Applicants must be at least 19 years old, possess a valid driver’s licence and pass a criminal record check.

The information session will give prospective members an opportunity to meet current volunteers, ask questions and learn about the different roles available within the organization.

Organizers say there is no obligation to join and encourage anyone interested in helping their community to attend.

South Peace Search and Rescue supports communities across the South Peace region and relies on volunteers to assist with emergency response, searches and community support initiatives.

The recruitment meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 25 at 7 p.m. at the South Peace Search and Rescue base located at 7277 Highway 97 in Dawson Creek.
