It’s the time of year when police warn the public about leaving vehicles running. With that in mind, the South Peace District Crime Prevention Association is launching an awareness campaign to support the RCMP.

Organizers are looking to prevent community members from becoming victims of crime. Until the end of December, efforts are being focused on theft from vehicles and theft of vehicles.

Typically, during colder weather, drivers leave their vehicle running to warm up. Police say these are crimes of opportunity and can often be prevented.

“When people are gassing up their vehicles, they are turned off but left unlocked. Keep valuables out of sight when you are not with your vehicle as thieves often use these opportunity to steal items,” said John Vetter, President of the South Peace District Crime Prevention Association.

Vehicle owners are being encouraged to lock their doors, remove all valuables, park in a well-lit area at night and not leave vehicles running while unattended.
