Tow companies, police and other first responders are gathering on Thursday for an awareness event called “Slow Down, Move Over.”

The event is organized by Abe Enns, owner of Profast Towing in Pouce Coupe.

Enns says the goal is to highlight the importance of giving emergency crews and roadside workers room to work safely.

Participants will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Ovintiv Event Centre in Dawson Creek before heading to Highway 2 near the airport.

In B.C., the “slow down, move over” law requires drivers to reduce their speed and safely change lanes when passing vehicles with flashing red, blue or amber lights.

Organizers say the event is meant to promote road safety after the recent incident involving Captain Brooks Gower, a Dawson Creek firefighter who was struck last October while responding to a call on Highway 97.

Enns says it’s time to bring awareness to Northeast B.C. following a number of recent close calls, and he hopes to make the event annual.
