A man arrested for shoplifting in Fort St. John is facing additional charges after police allege, they found a imitation firearm on the suspect.

Police were called to the Safeway on 100th Street Monday after a report of shoplifting. When officers arrived, the suspect had already been taken into custody by the store’s Loss Prevention Officer.

Mounties then conducted a search of the suspect and found an alleged imitation firearm.

‘’Imitation firearms look just like the real thing and if it had been used, that would have quickly changed the dynamics of the situation,” said Constable Chad Neustaeter, the Media Relations Officer for the Fort St. John RCMP.

Dylan Skerik is facing charges of theft under $5000, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order.

‘’This is one of the big reasons the police prefer to have the public call police to deal with suspects. No one ever knows what you are going to run into during a file,” said Neustaeter

Skerik remains in police custody until his next court appearance on May 29.
