DAWSON CREEK, B.C. - A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for a Dawson Creek man who pleaded guilty earlier this year in connection to a 2025 homicide and a separate shooting in the city.
Nolan Schmidt pleaded guilty on July 6, 2026, to manslaughter in the death of Johnny Freeman.
Schmidt had originally been charged with second-degree murder. He also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault against Brandon Badger.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place in B.C. Supreme Court in Dawson Creek on November 9, 10 and 12, 2026.
The charges stem from a violent series of incidents on January 19, 2025.
Police alleged Freeman was shot and killed at an apartment in the 1000 block of 102nd Avenue in Dawson Creek.
Prosecutors say Schmidt later shot Badger during a separate incident that occurred minutes later at the Mile Zero Hotel. The aggravated assault charge is connected to that second shooting.
Following the incidents, investigators alleged Schmidt fled from police before being arrested after a brief foot pursuit. RCMP also recovered the suspected murder weapon nearby.
The B.C. Prosecution Service has not announced what sentence Crown prosecutors will seek when the matter returns to court in November. Schmidt remains in custody.
