Chetwynd — Search and rescue efforts are ongoing today in the Groundbirch area for James ‘Jim’ Barnes, an avid outdoorsman who has been missing since late last week.
Barnes and his dog, Murphy, were reported missing shortly before 11:00 p.m. Friday, October 18 while out grouse hunting in the Chetwynd area.
In an update provided to CJDC-TV, North District RCMP Media Relations confirmed that police dog and air services are assisting in the search today and have been joined by resources from the BC Wildfire Service.
Although Fort St. John RCMP are not currently assisting, they were the initial point of contact for the missing persons report.
Search and Rescue teams from Prince George, Tumbler Ridge, Mackenzie, North and South Peace are working in unison to aid in the search that began Sunday.
“Our teams, along with trained civilian volunteers, are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and success of the operation,” ad South Peace and Rescue in a Facebook post.
Since being reported missing, Barnes's 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck was found on Ground Birch Road, off 269 Road, with his keys, wallet, backpack, and other valuables inside, along with his rifle.
Barnes is described as a 28-year-old caucasian man, standing 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds. He has brown hair and a mustache and was last seen wearing a 'TC Energy' ball cap, jeans, and a green or blue hoodie.
