OLD FORT — BC’s Ministry of Transportation says access to the isolated Peace River community of Old Fort could be restored as early as midday Thursday, marking a significant step for residents cut off for weeks following a landslide.
The ministry expects the temporary public access road to open at noon, pending safety conditions.
The route has been under construction since May 15, following a landslide that blocked the only road into the community of roughly 150 people
The slide prompted both an evacuation order and alert, leaving residents without direct access for weeks. Crews have been working to build a temporary route across the unstable ground, placing matting through slide debris and continuing to add gravel to stabilize the surface.
Officials say the work remains ongoing, but the anticipated opening marks a significant step toward restoring access for residents.
The area has seen repeated instability in recent years. According to the ministry, this is the third landslide affecting nearly the same stretch of road since 2018.
Once open, the temporary road is expected to provide limited access while longer-term solutions are explored.
This is a developing story
