HUDSON’S HOPE, B.C. - Northern Health says a physician expected to relocate to Hudson’s Hope earlier this year was unable to make the move, delaying plans to bolster local medical services and raising concerns about continued pressure on emergency care in the community.
The health authority says Hudson’s Hope is currently served by just one part-time physician while recruitment efforts continue for a second family doctor.
According to Northern Health, a physician who had planned to move to the community in June was unable to relocate for personal reasons.
As a result, the community remains without the additional medical coverage that had been anticipated for the summer.
The setback comes as residents have experienced periodic emergency department service interruptions tied to physician availability.
Northern Health says another physician has since been recruited and is in the process of relocating to Hudson’s Hope, but the transition is not expected to be complete until January.
Until then, the community will continue relying on its existing physician complement and locum support to maintain services.
The health authority says the new incoming doctor is expected to increase access to emergency services and improve patient care once fully established in the community.
However, with the new physician’s arrival now months away, residents could continue to see service disruptions if staffing challenges persist.
Hudson’s Hope has faced ongoing recruitment difficulties in recent years, mirroring challenges seen in many rural and northern communities across British Columbia as health authorities compete to attract physicians and other health-care workers.
