FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - Residents across Northeast B.C. will soon begin seeing changes to both RCMP vehicles and officer uniforms as the national police force introduces a new visual identity for front-line policing.
The RCMP says it is updating the appearance of its front-line vehicles for the first time in more than 30 years, with a new design intended to improve visibility and provide a modern, recognizable look across the country.
The redesigned police vehicles feature white doors on a black base with high-visibility reflective graphics. The RCMP says the goal is to ensure its vehicles are easily identifiable in all conditions, whether day or night, in rural or urban settings.
According to the RCMP, the new-look vehicles will begin appearing on Canadian roads later this summer. The rollout will occur gradually, with existing patrol vehicles remaining in service until they reach fleet replacement criteria.
During the transition period, old and new vehicle designs will operate side-by-side.
Mounties say all detachments across Canada, including those in the Peace Region, will eventually receive the updated vehicles as part of the national rollout.
The RCMP notes that provinces, territories and municipalities will be able to include local identifiers on vehicles based on regional requirements.
Officials say this will help maintain connections with local communities while preserving a consistent national RCMP identity.
The police force says public safety was a key consideration during the redesign process. The new markings were developed to help RCMP vehicles stand out from non-police vehicles and reduce the risk of police impersonation.
Members of the public who are uncertain about a vehicle or officer’s legitimacy are encouraged to contact their local detachment or call 911 if they feel unsafe.
The changes are not limited to RCMP vehicles.
Starting this fall, front-line RCMP officers in British Columbia will also begin wearing new navy-blue uniform shirts.
The transition to the new uniforms is already underway across Canada, after first being introduced in Prince Edward Island last October.
Officers may continue wearing the traditional grey shirts during the rollout period as inventory is replaced.
“The RCMP understands seeing a new uniform colour may cause confusion,” the force said in a statement announcing the change.
The RCMP says the combined updates to vehicles and uniforms are designed to create a more visible, modern and distinctive police presence while maintaining the organization’s recognizable image in communities throughout British Columbia and Canada.
