The Tumbler Ridge RCMP have destroyed and disposed of firearms seized from previous investigations. Mounties are informing the public of the ‘routine operation’ in order to avoid on-going rumours.
A total of 20 firearms, seized during investigations between 2016 and 2024, were destroyed. These firearms had been rendered inoperable through and approved destruction process and are no longer legally classified as firearms.
“It has come to the attention of the Tumbler Ridge RCMP that local community members found the destroyed firearms, which has led to rumours suggesting they were connected to the recent tragedy in February,” said police in a press release.
Police are clarifying that there is no connection whatsoever between the destroyed firearms and the February incident.
“All firearms related to the February tragedy are currently being held by the North District Major Crime Unit as part of their ongoing investigation,” said Sergeant Ian Rissanen, Interim Detachment Commander for Tumbler Ridge RCMP. “None of the firearms destroyed as part of this routine process are connected to that event.”
The Tumbler Ridge RCMP say the understand the concern these rumours may cause and encourages community members with questions or concerns to contact the detachment directly.
