RCMP issue warning about counterfeit $100 bills circulating in Dawson Creek

Source: Chatham-Kent Police Service.

Police in Dawson Creek are warning business owners to be on the lookout for counterfeit money that is circulating across the city.

Dawson Creek RCMP said individuals used fake $100 bills at three separate businesses on Wednesday.

Police are reminding business owners to be cautious when accepting money. Mounties also say the businesses are not obligated to accept $100 bills from customers.

Counterfeit bills usually have several notable differences from genuine ones:

  • Counterfeit bills may have the transparent strip and maple leaves present to appear authentic, but will be printed on regular paper, not polymer.
  • Counterfeit bills, such as $50.00 ones, often contain the transparent strips from lower value $5.00 or $10.00 bills. The denomination on the transparent strip should match that of the bill.
  • Multiple counterfeit bills will likely share the same serial number, as they usually replicate a single genuine bill.
