RCMP begin to rollout body-worn cameras for officers across Peace Region

London police announced Monday that officers will be wearing cameras,

If you get stopped by police in Dawson Creek or Fort St John in the next few days, chances are you will be on camera.

Mounties are currently rolling out the introduction of body-worn cameras for front-line officers.

Training is currently underway, but all front-line officers in Dawson Creek are expected to be equipped with a camera by the end of next week.

Staff Sargeant Scott Watson said that “officers in Fort Ft. John will also be wearing body cameras moving forward.”

In November, the RCMP announced that after years of preparations, it was starting the national rollout, with the aim of deploying more than 10,000 cameras over the next year.

Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, commanding officer of the RCMP’s E Division in B.C., says said calls for body-worn cameras came from “local, regional, Indigenous and provincial leaders to address the overall need to enhance public trust” in policing, and the cameras are part of a national standard for members of the RCMP.
