FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - Purple lights are once again shining across Fort St. John as the community joins the annual Purple Light Nights campaign to raise awareness about intimate partner violence.
October marks Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month, an initiative observed in communities across British Columbia and around the world.
The campaign encourages residents to display purple lights, wear purple, and show support for victims, survivors and families impacted by intimate partner violence.
The City of Fort St. John is again participating in the campaign by illuminating purple lights throughout the community.
Organizers say the display is intended to shine a light on an issue that often remains hidden while promoting awareness, support and education.
The local initiative was previously supported by city council and law enforcement, with organizers thanking municipal leaders and community partners for helping bring the campaign to Fort St. John.
Purple Light Nights takes place each October and encourages people to stand in solidarity with survivors while helping foster conversations about preventing intimate partner violence.
Communities throughout the province participate by lighting buildings, homes and public spaces in purple.
