The Peace River Regional District is rolling out its 2026 FireSmart campaign, with a renewed focus on helping rural residents reduce wildfire risks across the Peace Region.
The program is already underway, with its first community “Block Party” held earlier this month, and more events planned throughout the spring and summer.
Organizers say the campaign is designed to give residents practical tools and hands-on support to better protect their homes and properties.
Now in its sixth year, the FireSmart initiative continues to expand. Since 2021, the program has completed more than 500 home assessments, hosted dozens of community events, and carried out mitigation work on key infrastructure and community assets across the region.
PRRD Board Chair Brad Sperling says the program is making a difference, particularly for vulnerable residents. He notes it includes support for seniors and people with limited mobility, helping ensure they can also take steps to reduce wildfire risk.
Upcoming events are planned in several Peace Region communities, including Swan Lake Provincial Park, Charlie Lake, and Spencer Tuck Regional Park.
Residents attending can expect family-friendly gatherings, along with advice from local experts on how to make their homes more fire-resilient.
In addition to community events, residents can also book free Home Ignition Zone assessments or access additional supports through the program.
The campaign comes as wildfire preparedness remains a top concern across northeast B.C., where rural properties and interface areas can be especially vulnerable during fire season.
More information on the FireSmart program and available services can be found through the PRRD.
