The Peace River Regional District has approved a total of $500,000 in funding related to the expansion project of the fire hall in Pouce Coupe.
According to the PRRD’s report from their latest board meeting, $250,000 will fund the engineered design, which covers architectural planning before construction can begin.
The report notes that another $250,000 will go towards the fire hall expansion itself.
Fire officials said the project remains in its early stages. They are planning on building a new training area, as firefighters currently use the fire hall’s kitchen for workouts.
Officials added they also hope to add a decontamination area to help cleaning their gear after a call.
The Village of Pouce Coupe said in a statement, “We’re grateful to the Peace River Regional District for their support, as it represents an important opportunity to strengthen local emergency response, respond to new service demands, and honour the dedication of Pouce Coupe Volunteer Fire Department’s Volunteers.”
The village said it is currently assessing design options, funding models, and partnership opportunities to strengthen emergency service delivery across the region.
Fire officials said construction likely won’t begin for at least three years, adding that the expansion is long overdue.
“We take pride in the effort and dedication our firefighters put into their training.” said Fire Chief Blair Deveau. “The commitment of our firefighters ensures that when our community needs help, they’re ready, certified, capable, and confident.”
