Province, Doig River First Nation seek public input on Treaty 8 land use

Residents of the Peace Region can have their say in determining how a portion of Treaty 8 land will be used in northeast BC.

The plan is being co-developed by the provincial government and the Doig River First Nation.

“The final plan will include enhanced planning areas to preserve culturally and ecologically significant sites and support Doig River First Nation’s practice of treaty rights,” the province said.

Public input is needed on a portion of land located east of Fort St. John, near the Alberta border, including the proposed K’ih Tsaa?dze Tribal Park.

Residents are asked to share input on key areas of impact. Some portions of the land could see stronger environmental protections aimed at restoring ecosystems and supporting long-term environmental health.

Recreational access to the area is expected to continue unless public feedback shows otherwise. The plan will also establish clearer rules for where industrial activity could be allowed.

“Land-use planning is key to developing lasting solutions to support the natural-resource sector that local communities rely on, build BC’s economy and advance reconciliation with First Nations,” the province said.

An online survey will be available from February 4 to March 4. Residents can access the survey here.
