TUMBLER RIDGE— The BC Wildfire Service is supporting the District of Tumbler Ridge in carrying out a prescribed burn within the community to help reduce long-term wildfire risk.
The burn will cover up to 16 hectares and is located northwest of Highway 29, north of Flatbed Creek near the Lions Flatbed Creek Campground.
Trail closures will be in place during burn operations, and the public is being asked to respect posted signage and flagging for safety reasons.
Crews began preparation work this week, including the construction of control lines, assessment of burn conditions, and the removal of hazards such as dangerous trees prior to ignition.
Officials say the exact timing will depend on weather and site conditions, but the burn could begin as early as May 14 if conditions allow.
Smoke is expected during operations and may linger in the days following the burn, depending on weather and ventilation conditions.
According to the BC Wildfire Service, prescribed burns are conducted under detailed burn plans that outline objectives, safety measures, equipment requirements and post-fire monitoring procedures.
The goals of the burn include enhancing biodiversity, reducing the build-up of dead and combustible material, and lowering the risk of larger wildfires in the future.
Anyone spotting a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation is asked to contact the BC Wildfire Service at 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone.
