The Royal Canadian Legion branch in Pouce Coupe is marking a major milestone this weekend as both the national organization and the local branch celebrate 100 years of service.
The community celebration is scheduled for Saturday, July 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature activities for all ages.
The event will include a parade featuring Legion members and a pipe band, along with a bouncy castle, dunk tank, face painting, food trucks and access to the branch lounge.
The national Legion charter was signed on July 17, 1926. Valerie Bernier, President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34 said, the Pouce Coupe branch was among the first Legions established in Canada.
Beyond the anniversary festivities, Bernier hopes the event will highlight the Legion’s ongoing role in supporting veterans and serving as a gathering place for the community.
“As long as we have Canada, we will have veterans,” Bernier said, noting the Legion provides support and assistance to those who have served.
Bernier added that the term “veteran” extends beyond military personnel and includes others who have taken an oath to serve, such as members of the RCMP, Rangers and cadet organizations.
For Bernier, the Legion has been a lifelong part of her family. She said both of her parents received Legion funerals, and several family members served in the armed forces.
The Pouce Coupe branch has overcome challenges in recent years. Bernier said the organization was close to closing its doors about three years ago but has since rebuilt its membership and volunteer base.
Bernier thanked all the people and organizations for their support in saving the Legion.
“The Legion in Pouce Coupe is definitely a big part of the fabric of the community,” Bernier said, adding the branch serves not only Pouce Coupe residents but people from across the region.
Organizers are encouraging residents from throughout the Peace Region to attend Saturday’s celebration and help commemorate a century of service, remembrance and community involvement.
The Legion is located at 5009 47 Avenue in Pouce Coupe.
