The constituency office of North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA Bowinn Ma was behind police tape Friday morning as Mounties investigated an “explosion.”
Few details have been confirmed, but North Vancouver RCMP described the incident as a “Lower Lonsdale explosion” in a media advisory. The detachment is planning to hold a news conference about the incident at 1:30 p.m.
Ma who is also BC’s infrastructure minister, says there was a “frightening” security incident at her constituency office in North Vancouver early Friday.
Ma says in a statement that all meetings and appointments at the office have been cancelled for the day.
Her statement says that thankfully, nobody was injured, and she appreciates the concern expressed by community members.
Ma doesn’t describe the incident and says due to an active police investigation, she won’t be able to provide more details about what happened, although she wants to thank the officers who have responded.
North Vancouver RCMP say they will provide a briefing this afternoon about an incident at Esplanade Ave., where Ma’s office is located.
Premier David Eby says his thoughts are with Ma, her staff, and community.
“Bowinn Ma is an incredible community leader, who I am proud to work with every day. No matter who you are, or what you do for a living, you have a right to safety at work,” he says in a social media post.
Ma’s statement says the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning.
“I appreciate the concern expressed by community members and am grateful to serve such a caring and compassionate community,” she says.
There was a heavy police presence at the office complex Friday afternoon, with the door to Ma’s office open.
Officers were examining and dusting the doorway, but workers were still inside the floors above, watching the police operation.
A spokesperson for the premier’s office says other MLAs were not advised to close their doors, but the office had advised caution and wants staff and legislators to do what they feel comfortable with.
