A petition is gaining traction in Fort St. John, urging the BC Prosecution Service to reconsider the sentence of a man who pleaded guilty to sexual interference.

The petition calls for a re-evaluation of Timothy Schlosser’s sentence.

The petition was started anonymously, but it has since gained over 750 signatures.

Schlosser was handed a conditional sentence of house arrest for 18 months in a Fort St. John courtroom in October.

The mother of the girl involved told CJDC-TV News at the time that her daughter was four years old when the offense occurred.

The petition states that house arrest does not constitute justice for a child who will carry the trauma for life.

The court also ordered Schlosser to provide a DNA sample. He will be listed on the National Sex Offender Registry for the next 20 years.

Judge Oliver Fleck also prohibited Schlosser from attending public parks and from working or volunteering with young persons during that 20-year period.

As part of the sentence, Schlosser also received 36 months of probation instead of going to jail.

Organizers of the petition say they would like to see harsher penalties for child sexual abuse crimes, and it starts with fixing cases like this one.
